Romney Admits Support for Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Presidential hopeful Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) was interviewed last week by Katie Couric of CBS News, and the following exchange occured, in which Romney advocated his support for embryonic stem cell research.  I was very disappointed to hear that, because Romney listed his opposition to this embryonic stem cell research as the reason he converted back to being a pro-life candidate (he ran as a pro-abortion candidate in Massachusetts).

Couric: So are you opposed to stem cell research?

Romney: No, I'm very much in favor of stem cell research, but in a way which I believe is moral and ethical. And creating new embryos through embryo farming or through cloning, I find to be unethical and I would not pursue that course of stem cell research.

Couric
: So what kind of embryos - embryos that are created for procreation and then would be discarded? Are those the ones that you feel are perfectly fine from which to cull cells for stem cell research?

Romney
: Yes, those embryos that are referred to commonly as surplus embryos from in-vitro fertilization. Those embryos, I hope, could be available for adoption for people who would like to adopt embryos. But if a parent decides they would want to donate one of those embryos for purposes of research, in my view, that's acceptable.

Alright, so let's get this straight... According to Romney, it's not "moral and ethical" to create living embryos to be destroyed for the sake of research, but it is "moral and ethical" for parents to give permission for their living embryos to be destroyed for the sake of research.

This is not a viable pro-life position.  A person either believe all life is valuable, or doesn't.  By his own statements, Romney doesn't.

Prayers Are With Them (Update 2)

Breitbart News Agency is reporting this afternoon that the Colorado gunman at New Life Church was hit "multiple times" by armed security officer Jeanne Assam, but that they were non-lethal shots.  The fatal shot was of the self-inflicted variety, coming from the gunman himself, after Assam had already shot him.

That doesn't change the fact that the man had come to shoot many more people than he actually did, and Jeanne Assam put an end to the tragedy long before the gunman would have.

Women Oppose Abortion Too

When I make my argument for why abortion is immoral, I'm often criticized because I'm a man, and can never understand what a woman goes through in making that decision.  It's a stupid rationale because my being a man doesn't change the substance of a moral argument.  It's like saying that only people who've crossed the Rio Grande illegally can debate the merits of securing the border and granting amnesty to illegal aliens... it's silly!

But, if coming from a woman's mouth is what makes the argument valid for Liberals, then here's a good messenger to speak to them!

Kristi Burton, a 20-year-old law student, is leading a petition drive that would put a Colorado state constitutional amendment on the ballot which would give inalienable rights to babies from the moment of conception.

Go Kristi!

Huckabee's 'Glass Jaw'

Most of us probably couldn't miss the Drudge headline today which reads, "DEMS HOLD FIRE ON HUCKABEE; SEE 'EASY KILL' IN GENERAL ELECTION."

Jonathan Martin of Politco.com has more of the story though.  He emailed DNC officials about the veracity of the story, and Communications Director Karen Finney responded, claiming that the report is coming from the Romney camp, not the DNC:

"We always appreciate having our hard work noticed, and we know Mitt Romney likes to feel special, but the truth is we've been tracking Huckabee for over a year. The Romney campaign should take heart in the fact that the Drudge Report is buying their spin hook, line and sinker because nothing in that story came from us."

Who knows what the real story is, but it seems to me that presidential hopeful Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) would have a lot to gain by such an attack on rival Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR), who has been overtaking Romney in recent polls.  The DNC on the other hand, if a Huckabee nomination really is what they'd want, would have a lot to lose by revealing that now.

Islamophobia a Crime?

While scores of Muslims and Muslim sympathizers are meeting in Constantinople to advocate the criminalization of "Islamophobia," Muslims in Algeria reminded us that it's okay to be afraid of them by blowing up United Nations offices there, killing dozens and wounding hundreds more.

Prayers Are With Them (Update)

Yesterday I posted about the Colorado church shootings and wrote that I was thankful that New Life Church had "enough foresight to employ security guards who could actually protect them, ending the tragedy much sooner than the gunman would have."  The gunman (who will remain unnamed in this column) was shot by Jeanne Assam, an armed security guard.

New details have emerged today that only further show how true that is.  Channel 7 News in Denver is reporting today that the gunman entered New Life "carrying two handguns, an assault rifle and over 1,000 rounds of ammunition."

In addition, KUSA-TV in Denver is reporting that the gunman, who had been kicked out of Youth With a Mission (a missionary training school), had also left more than a dozen threatening messages on a church website with the most recent one, posted less than twelve hours before the rampage began, containing the following excerpt:

"...God, I can't wait till I can kill you people.  Feel no remorse, no sense of shame, I don't care if I live or die in the shoot-out. All I want to do is kill and injure as many of you ... as I can especially Christians..."

With three guns, a thousand rounds of ammo, and a stated diabolical aim to kill as many Christians as he can, I'd say the gunman intended to shoot more than three people at New Life Church.  While this is still an immense tragedy, as two teenage sisters were killed in the attack, the foresight of New Life Church to allow licensed, qualified guards to carry guns and the bravery of Jeanne Assam to use it did, in fact, put an end to the tragedy long before the gunman would have.

Embarrassing Error by Jim Henley

Jim Henley should pull a "New Republic" and hire a new fact checker!  Why?  Because in a recent article, Henley concluded that:

"Mark Steyn is a racist douchebag in addition to being a ridiculous figure..."

Sounds like something a reasonable adult would say, doesn't it?  Anyway, Henley based his conclusion on the following sentence from Steyn's book:

"Just look at the development within Europe, where the number of Muslims is expanding like mosquitoes."

The only problem is that Mark Steyn didn't say that... the statement appears in his book, but as a quote attributed to a Norwegian imam (Muslim preacher), Mullah Krekar:

" 'We're the ones who will change you,' the Norwegian imam Mullah Krekar told the Oslo newspaper Dagbladet in 2006. 'Just look at the development within Europe, where the number of Muslims is expanding like mosquitoes. Every Western woman in the EU is producing an average of 1.4 children. Every Muslim woman in the same countries is producing 3.5 children.'  As he summed it up: 'Our way of thinking will prove more powerful than yours.'"

Oops!  No word yet on whether Henley thinks the Muslim imam is a "racist douchebag" for making the remark.  I doubt we'll find out though, as Henley is in the process of retracting his statements...

Next time, try reading a full paragraph Henley!

Prayers Are With Them

Our prayers today are with the victims and families of New Life Church and Youth With a Mission, two Colorado churches that were attacked in a Columbine-style shooting this weekend.  We're also thankful that New Life had enough foresight to employ security guards who could actually protect themending the tragedy much sooner than the gunman would have:

"The gunman was killed by a member of the church's armed security staff before police arrived..."

Remembering Pearl Harbor

Sixty-six years ago today, our nation was attacked at Pearl Harbor. President Franklin D. Roosevelt deemed it "a day that will live in infamy." Roosevelt, however, recognized the evil of his time and sent our troops to war in order to defeat it. Two and a half years later, our brave men stormed the beaches of Normandy, and that D-Day struggle turned the tide of the entire war, and we should forever honor their sacrifice.

Our troops today are no less brave and our enemies no less evil.  That is why we should supply our men and women in uniform with the latitude and resources that they need to defeat Islamo-fascism with the same fervor and finality as Nazi Germany.

Two Terrific Articles on Global Warming Hysteria

With everybody who's anybody in the environmentalist world catching a private jet and heading to Bali this week (causing greenhouse emmissions equal to more than 20,000 cars in a year), here are a couple of great articles that discuss our overreaction (a.k.a. mob hysteria) to this non-crisis and the true aims of the "climate change" movement.

In Kneed of Common Decency (Update)

I posted on this story a couple months ago, and I said that you should remember the name of Sgt. Andrea Eichhorn of the Casselberry, Florida Police Department, because she is "a despicable human being."

Sgt. Eichhorn was the officer that responded to a call at the home of one-year-old Joey Cosmillo, who had fallen into the family pool and was not breathing.  The family carried the boy into the house, called 9-1-1 and was attempting to revive him when Eichhorn arrived and slipped in a puddle of water near the boy, causing her to fall and break her knee.

Joey did survive the near-drowning, but suffered severe brain damage leaving him unable to walk, talk, or swallow, a tragedy in itself.  The boy now lives in a nursing home, eating and breathing through tubes.  But that did not stop Eichhorn from attempting to sue the family.  Apparently, the Cosmillos were negligent because they did not wipe up the puddles of water around their unresponsive son before rescuers arrived, causing Eichhorn to slip and break her knee.  Unbelievable!

Well, I have a very encouraging update for you!  Eichhorn has since dropped her unmerited lawsuit against the Cosmillos (she should be forced to reimburse any legal expenses they've incurred), but she has also been fired from the Casselberry Police Department!

I applaud them for their brave move, as I'm sure she's going to try to sue the department now as well, but they made the correct decision.  You don't pay your police officers to further victimize victims.

Liberal Political Tactics (Update)

I posted about this yesterday, but wanted to give you an update.  James Buss, a former teachers union president, will not face charges for posing as a Conservative online and posting a veiled threat of a Columbine-style school shooting.  CNS News has the story:

"A Wisconsin teacher who posted an 'offensive and disgusting comment' about the Columbine High School shooting on a conservative blog earlier this month will not face criminal charges, a prosecutor said Wednesday.  Washington County District Attorney Todd martens said James Buss's comment - that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold 'knew how to deal with the overpaid teacher union thugs.  One shot at a time!' - is protected speech under the state and U.S. constitutions, the prosecutor decided.  Buss, a 46-year-old high school chemistry teacher, was arrested last week for making what some considered a threatening remark in an online discussion about teacher salaries, the Associated Press reported.  Buss won't face charges, because the prosecutor decideed his comment was not likely to incite 'imminent lawless action,' the Associated Press reported.  He may lose his job, however.  He's on paid leave pending a school district investigation.  Free speech advocates insisted that Buss should not face charges for expressing his opinion."

I was not advocating yesterday that Buss be charged with any crime, though the police were certainly justified in taking him into custody.  It's just tragic that people like Buss don't care any longer about making a reasoned, logical argument and feel that the only way to get a point across is to try to discredit, by any means necessary, those who hold the opposing view.  That kind of person does not belong in a classroom, teaching the next generation.

Thus, he should absolutely lose his job as a teacher in the district.

Liberal Political Tactics

"Moby" is a slang term used to describe a Liberal, posing as an anonymous Conservative, who goes on blogs and makes outrageous comments.  Well that behavior has gotten one teacher, who was also president of the district's teachers union, suspended and arrested:

"As readers of a conservative blog debated the subject of teacher salaries, a writer using the pseudonym 'Observer' weighed in.

"The West Bend teachers' salaries made him sick, the person wrote, adding that the 1999 Columbine High School killers had the right idea.

" 'They knew how to deal with the overpaid teacher union thugs. One shot at a time! Too bad the liberls (sic) rip them; they were heros (sic) and should be remembered that way,' the writer said.

"But police say the writer was a teacher himself - and the past president of a teachers union.

"James Buss was arrested Thursday by West Bend police, and the 46-year-old Cudahy man could face criminal charges. He has been suspended from his job as a teacher at Oak Creek High School."

This sort of idiotic behavior (including the poor spelling) is, unfortunately, becoming more and more common.  It's only employed by those who do not have the intellectual capacity to make an honest, reasoned, and logical argument for his or her cause.  That's why we at BCC promised, at the beginning, that we would not employ such tactics.

To all of you who employ such tactics, here's an example of what honest debate can do... or you can just make threats and get arrested like this union president did...

Musclehead Revolution Responds to BCC Comment

I will preface this post by saying that Musclehead Revolution is one of my favorite blogs, and its author, Kevin McCullough, one of my favorite talk radio hosts (besides J. Michael McCoy of Mac's World, of course).  However, I was a little bit upset by his post yesterday, implying that Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR) was behind the Mormon push polling against Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA).  By now, our readers should know that we at BoldColorConservative are not endorsing a primary candidate, but don't feel that conservative candidates should be unfairly attacked.  Thus, I left this comment on McCullough's post:

"C'mon Kevin... I've read your blog for a long time, and thoroughly enjoyed your book. I've never known you to accuse people of being part of a conspiracy with absolutely no evidence whatsoever. Who knows if it was Huckabee, another Republican candidate, or someone else altogether. I've always known you to be honest and straight forward, and attacking credible Republican candidates for these sorts of things is counter-productive. Besides, I doubt Huckabee's campaign could afford something like that anyway..."

Today, McCullough responded to that comment with an entire post explaining why he is nervous about Gov. Huckabee, quoting my comment in that body of that post.  I read the entire response and thought that McCullough's analysis was honest, insightful, and in my opinion, much more effective than accusing Huckabee's campaign of being part of some grand conspiracy to push poll Gov. Romney.

I appreciate your honesty and transparency, Kevin, and look forward to your continued insight and commentary on the race...

Perhaps you would consider adding us to your blog roll!

An Unlikely Republican Constituency?

A British newspaper is reporting today that more and more legal U.S. immigrants are registering as Republicans:

"Minutes after taking the Pledge of Allegiance, new American citizens are urged to register as voters by Democratic activists who see them as natural party supporters who could hold the key to the 2008 election.

"But with increasing illegal immigration threatening the economy and security of the United States, many legal immigrants anxious to uphold the laws of their adopted country are moving towards the more hard-line immigration stance of Republicans.

"Even in California’s Democratic-controlled San Diego, sizeable numbers of America’s newly-minted potential voters said that illegal immigrants should be penalised rather than given an easy route to citizenship as most Democrats advocate."

Imagine that... legal immigrants who obeyed our laws and waited their turn do not favor an amnesty for those who've circumvented the process by just sneaking in.  So don't buy it when Democrats and the media (please pardon my redundancy) tell you that Republicans are anti-immigrant.  In reality, we're pro-law enforcement.

And those who've immigrated to our country legally tend to agree...
