Senate Threatens 'Economic Stimulus' Plan

President Bush warned the Senate last night not to mess with the economic stimulus plan that was negotiated by the House.  But they've got way too much pandering to do:

Under a plan unveiled Monday by Sen. Max Baucus, D-Montana, the Finance Committee chairman, some 20 million senior citizens not covered by the House plan because they don't have income would receive rebates.

If those 20 million seniors don't have income, then they didn't pay any taxes.  How then would they receive a tax "rebate?"

Now, I'm not a big fan of the plan anyway, but this is just pure pandering and redistribution of wealth...

And the Deaf Shall Hear

The Daily Mail reports that 11-year-old Briton Jerome Bartens was diagnosed deaf in the right ear at age two, but...

...when playing pool with his friends in a church hall Jerome felt a sudden pop. He put his finger in his ear and there was the tip of a cotton wool bud which had been wedged there for almost 10 years.

And his hearing immediately returned!  Despite examinations by doctors and hearing specialists, they failed to notice the centimeter-long obstruction and the boy spent his entire childhood deaf in the right ear.

Just another example of the high-quality care one can expect in a universal healthcare system.

Leave Mary Kate Alone!

When a decidedly over-zealous and strange, yet awkwardly compelling fan implored the world from his YouTube perch to "leave Britney alone," people took notice.  He even got his own reality TV show (though, who doesn't have one these days?).  I would like to take his model, though, and tweak it a bit.  I won't be dying my hair, wearing make-up, crying, or even making a video, but I want to make my case for someone else who's been taking some heat these days.  Mary Kate Olsen.

Olsen has been somewhat maligned in the media lately, following the tragic and untimely death of actor Heath Ledger.  Ledger's masseuse, Diana Wolozin, reportedly called Olsen at least three times before calling 9-1-1 after she discovered Ledger unconscious in his New York apartment.  Olsen, 3,000 miles away in California, sent her private security detail to help, though I'm sure that neither she nor Wolozin knew that Ledger had already passed away.

Mary Kate Olsen was not responsible for Ledger's death, nor the questionable actions of Ms. Wolozin and the media's attempt to make her complicite in either is inexplicable and immoral.  She has enough problems and does not need either of these generically implanted onto her conscience.

Leave Mary Kate alone.

A Deeply Courageous Woman!

Here's a deeply moving story of a very courageous woman:

A mother made the ultimate sacrfice by refusing cancer treatment to give birth to a healthy baby boy.

Lorraine Allard was told four months into the pregnancy the devastating news that she was in the advanced stages of cancer.

A further blow came when doctors advised her to terminate the foetus, which was 23 weeks old, and start chemotherapy straight away.

Instead, she insisted on waiting long enough to give her unborn son a chance to survive, telling her husband, Martyn: "If I am going to die, my baby is going to live."

Liam is recovering well, though Lorraine has passed away.  Is there any more beautiful story than a parent forsaking his or her own life for a child?  It is one I will be telling for a long time...

Kucinich Drops Out; Who Does It Help?

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) has dropped his bid for the White House, leaving voters across the country wondering, "Uhhh... who?"

Though he wants to spend more time with his family and pursuing other hobbies such as interacting with UFO's and representing the tenth district of Ohio, I for one am already looking forward to his 2012 bid for the White House.

Kucinich did not garner very much support so it's difficult to say who his departure helps the most, but I would say the Democrat Party.

Bigots Bigots Everywhere!

As an Iowan, I had a front-row seat to the underhanded suggestions by Gov. Mitt Romney's presidential campaign that evangelicals were supporting Gov. Mike Huckabee because we're too bigoted to support a Mormon.  It's true that the evangelical vote did power Huckabee to a win in Iowa, but I have a different explanation for why we did it.  Values...

There's another side of this story though that is not being told by Romney, or virtually anybody else for that matter.  Romney won the Nevada Caucuses based largely on his support from Mormons in the state, who made up one out of every four Caucus attendees, and who "almost unanimously supported Mitt Romney," and accounted for "about half" of Romney's overall vote total.  Were they too bigoted to vote for evangelical or protestant candidates?

Or should we prefer the way of the Democrats?  Get a little diversity in the pool and then vote for the candidate whose immutable traits most resemble our own.  Sen. Hillary Clinton won the New Hampshire primary by garnering nearly half of the female vote to Barack Obama's 34% and John Edwards' 15%.  Were they too bigoted to vote for male candidates?

Sen. Barack Obama will most likely win the South Carolina primary because he is currently getting support from nearly seven out of ten African-American voters to Hillary's anemic 16% and Edwards' 6%.  Are they too bigoted to vote for white candidates?

All this apparenly has lead black women to quite a quandry... Do they trust the prejudice telling them to vote against a man or against a white?

I hope you're picking up on my sarcasm.  This is not bigotry, but a natural human tendency.  Though the Democrats are increasinly voting by race and gender, at least Republicans are still judging candidates by character and values rather than immutable genetic traits.

Huckabee earned my vote because he was the only candidate that is trustworthy on right-to-life and traditional-family issues, not because of some anti-Mormon "bigotry."  And any "analyst" who thinks he or she knows my thoughts and motivations better than I do is simply full of crap...

Al Franken is a Big Fat Jerk

Former Saturday Night Live cast member, author, failed talk radio host, and current Minnesota Senate candidate Al Franken (D) is a big fat jerk!  In a recent campaign engagement at Carleton College, Franken began taunting and mocking a Conservative undergraduate student who had come to hear him speak.  Franken even refused to shake the student's hand after he finished his little tantrum.  The story of the unprovoked attack was corroborated by the president of the Carleton Democrats.

Another moving tale of a Liberal working tirelessly to unite America!

Note: The title of this post is a JOKE, referencing one of Mr. Franken's books which is entitled, "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot."

Clinton Endorsement Secured by $1.5 Million Earmark?

In a major appropriations bill that passed late last year, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) secured an earmark of nearly $1.5 million for the Abyssinian Development Corporation (ADC).  The ADC is chaired by Rev. Calvin O. Butts III, who pastors the Abyssinian Baptist Church of Harlem, one of the oldest African-American churches in America.

Imagine my surprise when Butts endorsed Clinton for president last week.  Hmmm... I wonder why.

I can't say it enough.  Pork barrel spending is the root of all corruption in Washington.  Whenever you have that much money freely flowing from the federal treasury, people are bound to have some favors to repay...

Georgia Pays Students to Stay in School

Fulton County schools have decided to pay students upwards of $8 per hour to stay in school.  What a waste!  If a person isn't motivated enough to finish high school, then he or she isn't going to fare very well in the job market.  How about telling students that if they don't finish high school, they'll spend the next ten years working their way up to $8 per hour.

Currently, the program is privately funded, so I guess I don't really have a problem with it.  Just wait though... it won't be long until taxpayers are forced to foot the bill.

Give Me Your... Thermostats? (Update)

California is reportedly abandoning its proposal to install thermostats in all homes and businesses that the state can control.  I don't buy it.  The Enviro-socialists who sit on their private jets and think this stuff up will not rest until they can tell residents what temperature their house or business can be.

What Are Black Women to Do?

CNN informs us that black women face "a unique, and most unexpected dilemma... Should they vote their race, or should they vote their gender?"

Call me old fashioned but maybe they should investigate the candidates and vote for one based on issues and experience rather than immutable traits... But that might lead them to a Republican, so CNN can't encourage that now, can they?

Honor Killings Arrive in America (Update 3)

A blogger who goes by the name "Shir Ha Shirim" participated in a spirited debate regarding one of my other posts on this topic, and he has now responded with a post of his own.  In his response, "Shirim" takes the discussion to "a more abstract level."  I would argue that to the two girls who were shot by their Islamic father because they had non-Muslim boyfriends would see this on strictly a concrete and practical level, which I do as well.

We're not talking about a sermon here, which one could expositorily differentiate good point from bad.  This was a strictly evil act by a man that practices a radical form of Islam.  That is the truth.  This was an honor killing, a practice which is not too uncommon throughout the Muslim world and now, unfortunately, has immigrated to our shores.

My point here is that moderate Muslims should be willing to call a spade a spade.  Instead, they tell us it's just a case of "domestic violence," or worse... they try to justify it by the fact that other religions do it, too, or that Christians fought in the Crusades.  Give me a break!

People know what is going on when this happens, and when you try to deceive us by calling it something else or blow smoke over it by diverting our attention with an "abstract" discussion of relgion, it seems a little fishy.  If this is not a form of the religion that you adhere to nor approve of, then there is nothing to hide!

Just call this what it is... an honor killing.  Then condemn the practice in all its forms!

Honor Killings Arrive in America (Update 2)

Fox News has released the "chilling" 911 call from one of the two sisters who were allegedly killed by their father on New Year's Day.

"The first call, made at 7:33 p.m. on Jan. 1 and determined to be made by Sarah Said, was dialed from a cell phone from an unknown location, according to police. Sarah can be heard telling the operator repeatedly 'I'm dying.'"

We've been following this since the tragedy took place, and this is just another heart-breaking chapter in a heart-wrenching story.  Their father, Yaser Abdel Said, a Muslim, had earlier threatened one of the girls for "dating a non-Muslim boy."  He has yet to be apprehended.

Mexico Now Protesting Its Citizens' Return

I posted Tuesday about Mexico's border towns preparing for a large influx of illegal immigrants returning to the country after Arizona's tough new immigration laws take effect.  Well now a delegation of Mexican lawmakers is traveling to Tucson to protest, saying that the return of their own citizens "will have a devastating affect on the Mexican state."

They should have thought about that before designing a policy of dealing with their poor by simply teaching them how to sneak across the Rio Grande.

The real irony here is that their government is trying much harder to keep Mexicans from crossing the border than ours is.

I'm a Doctor in HillaryCare! (Update)

Apparently I'd be a dentist too!  The Daily Mail reports that due to long waiting lists and lack of access to government dentists, people are being forced to pull their own teeth rather than pay for private care:

More than seven million patients have been unable to see an NHS dentist for almost two years.

Most of those denied access have paid for private care instead, says Citizens Advice.

But almost three million have gone without treatment altogether, claims the charity.

The figure includes thousands of children and is much higher than Government estimates.

Why do we want universal healthcare in America?
