Measles Make Their LLWS Debut

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

When two Japanese youngsters visiting the U.S. to be part of the Little League World Series were diagnosed this past week with measles, officials were able to alert people who may have been exposed.  Those affected individuals could go and get a check up, make sure that their vaccines were up to date, and make sure that they have not contracted a serious illness.

The diagnosed individuals came to our country through legitimate channels, bringing a dangerous disease with them.  What happens when a person sneaks into our country, without our knowledge or any documentation, and brings a communicable disease with them?

You Can't Have Your Kid and Kill It Too

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

Mitt Romney (October 26, 1994):
"... regardless of one's beliefs about choice, you would hope it would be safe and legal."

Mitt Romney (March 20, 2002):
"On a personal basis, I don't favor abortion.  However, as governor of the commonwealth, I will protect a woman's right to choose under the laws of the country and the commonwealth.  That's the same position I've had for many years."

Mitt Romney (February 18, 2007):
"Abortion is taking human life.  There's no question but that human life begins when all the DNA is there necessary for cells to divide and become a human being.  Is it alive?  Yes.  Is it human?  Yes.  And, therefore, when we abort a fetus, we are taking a life at its infancy, at its very, very beginning roots, and a civilized society, I believe, respects the sanctity of human life... And in my particular view, I believe in life, I believe in respecting life, and I believe that we should, as a series of states, allow states to make their own choice in this regard."

Mitt Romney (August 6, 2007):
"We support a Human Life Amendment to the Constitution and we endorse legislation to make it clear that the 14th Amendment's protections apply to unborn children."  (These would make abortion illegal nationwide, by the way)

Mitt Romney (August 21, 2007)
"My view, of course, is I'm a pro-life individual.  That's the position I support.  But I'd let states have this choice rather than let the federal government have it."

So which is it?  Abortion should be "safe and legal," so you will "protect a woman's right to choose?"  Or, "abortion is taking human life," but let's "allow states to make their own choice," in whether or not to take that life?  Or do you "support a Human Life Amendment to the Constitution," which would make abortion illegal in every state?  Or are you going to stick with letting "states have this choice?"

I'm confused.  And either Governor Romney is as well, or he is intentionally misleading the voters in this country.  Just take a stand and stand firm and quit with the flip-flop-flip!  Drop the line about personally respecting life, but letting others choose whether or not to end it.

You can't have your kid and kill it too.

The Hogwarts School of Public Policy

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

A new study is out that states that about 22% of Liberals did not read any book last year compared to 34% of conservatives... GASP!  While I believe the true revelation of the poll is that conservatives are more honest, let's just take those numbers at face value.

Pat Schroeder (D-CO) sure does.  She's the president of the American Association of Publishers, but is probably better known as one of the most liberal members of the House of Representatives, where she served from 1973-1996.

She was quick to interpret the poll saying, "The Karl Roves of the world have built a generation that just wants a couple slogans... It's pretty hard to write a book saying, 'No new taxes, no new taxes, no new taxes,' on every page."  What she doesn't tell you is that this study was not referring only to books on public policy... it was ANY book.  So apparently Liberals reading "Harry Potter" are way more policy savvy than those pesky "just give me a slogan" Conservatives.  Hogwarts School of Public Policy, I guess.

So let's compare political authors, then... which authors do you see on the New York Times best sellers list?  Ann Coulter or Laura Flanders?  Sean Hannity or Al Franken?  Newt Gingrich or... well, you get the point.

Schroeder went on to observe that Liberals "can't say anything in less than paragraphs.  We really want the whole picture, want to peel the onion."  And while it's refreshing to hear a Liberal admit that they're boring and long winded, again her arguments are misguided.  It just takes Liberals longer issues because they have to explain away all the various stances they've held on that issue.  Don't believe me?  Just listen to Hilary Clinton or John Kerry talk about their "position" on the War in Iraq from 2002 until now... it's quite humorous.

Conservatives, explaining their convictions using common sense, tend to be much more efficient.  Though last time I checked, they still use paragraphs.

Violation of Church & State

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

In his Letter to the Danbury Baptists in 1802, Thomas Jefferson interpreted the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution as "building a wall of separation of Church and State."  Liberals have seized on his commentary as an excuse to evict any mention of Judeo-Christian principles from the public square.  However, Jefferson's comments also imply his desire to limit "the legitimate powers of government reach" into the Church.  It's a two-way street... but not to Liberals.

The state of New Jersey is investigating a private Methodist ministry called the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association (OGCMA) because, out of their own religious convictions, they will not allow civil union ceremonies between same-sex couples to be performed at their facility.

This episode started when a Lesbian couple, Harriet Bernstein and Luisa Paster, applied to use the property for a civil union ceremony, recently legalized under New Jersey law.  When OGCMA turned down their application and said that they "did not allow civil unions to be held," the women filed a complaint under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination.

Bernstein also had this to say: "In an apparent distortion of the First Amendment, they are claiming that they have the right to discriminate against people who do not share their religious tenets."  And her statement is mostly correct, except for the part about it being a "distortion of the First Amendment."  In reality, this is the very abuse it protects against!  As a private organization, they absolutely have the right to decide how and by whom their own property is used.

The question that needs to be asked is this: Do Liberals really believe in the separation of church and state, or does their true intent lie in subjecting the church to the state?

Correct in Principal

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

Apparently, Muslims in New York are upset that the new principal of the city's public "Arabic-themed school" (Madrassa) is a Jewish woman, Danielle Salzberg.  "It's like somebody spit in our face as Arabs," said Zein Rimawi, a "Muslim activist."

I don't see what all the fuss is about.  If you think that public tax dollars should go toward educating students in a public Muslim school, then you give the government control over that education.

You want to pick your own principal?  Then use your own money...

The Universal Idiocy of Socialized Health Care

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

Just take five minutes and watch this video:

It describes the plight of a Canadian man who would have had to wait eight months for a vital brain surgery because of Canada's inefficient social (universal) health care system.  Instead of dying, he decided to come to America, where he had to pay all the bills himself (~$28,000).  But the good news is he gets to live.
Tell me again why we want to bring this to America...

Sexual Diminution

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

You're not going to believe this, but science is now telling us that our sex-saturated society not only has physical, but psychological consequenses as well.  The American Psychological Association just published a study, which prompted one researcher, Dr. Eileen L. Zurbriggen (University of California, Santa Cruz) to conclude, "The consequences of the sexualization of girls in the media today are very real and are likely to be a negative influence on girls' healthy development."

Wow... sex is not all fun and games, it has serious consequences.  Who would have ever thought?  (note sarcasm)

What do you want to bet that the findings of this study will not be included in Sex Ed classes in our public schools though?  I'm not holding my breath...

That's A Lot of Haricuts!

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

Well I'm sure you won't believe this, but the New York Post disclosed today that Presidential hopeful John Edwards (D-NC), the candidate who has led the way in preventing a Democrat debate on Fox News, and in criticizing fellow Dems for taking contributions from NewsCorp (Fox's parent company), was paid more than $800,000 by NewsCorp for his book, "Home: The Blueprints of Our Lives."

$800,000... that's a lot of money.  It's roughly equivalent to what he would charge for 15 speeches about poverty, and would cover a full 2000 haircuts!

A Vick-tory for Civil Rights

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

The NAACP has announced their support for NFL Quarterback, Michael Vick, who was recently indicted on charges that he ran a brutal dog fighting operation at his Virginia home.  R.L. White, President of the Atlanta Chapter of the NAACP had this to say:
"If Mr. Vick is guilty, he should pay for his crime, but to treat him as he is being treated now is also a crime.  Be restrained in your premature judgment until the legal process is completed."

Gosh... I don't recall any "civil rights" leaders calling for any measure of moderation when three white Duke Lacrosse players were indicted for raping a black stripper.  And, when the players were finally exonerated, I didn't hear any apologies from those "civil rights" leaders.

Does anyone else sense a double standard?

Gitmo "Torture" Better Than Actual Torture

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

The Times Online (UK) is reporting today that a Guantanamo Bay detainee is fighting to stay at the "infamous" detention facility, arguing that he fears he would be "tortured or killed" if the U.S. returns him to his native Algeria.  Hmmm... he wants to stay at Gitmo because he doesn't want to be tortured.

But wait, I thought Liberals want to close Gitmo because the sadistic U.S. soldiers down there are always torturing and severely mistreating the inmates.  I've even included a full statement from Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), regarding our treatment of detainees.  The highlight is when Durbin compared the actions of American soldiers to techniques used by, "Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some other mad regime- Pol Pot or others- that had no concern for human beings."

It would seem that that's not actually the case though.  Otherwise why would a prisoner, fearing torture and death, legally fight to stay at Guantanamo Bay?  I think you would have been hard pressed to find any prisoner of one of those "mad regimes" fighting to keep his spot in a concentration camp or gulag.

Perhaps the Most Awful News (Update 2)

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

I hope you're all following this case as closely as I am (check out my other blogs for the full story).  A Maryland child-rapist is now considered a "free man" by local authorities.  And, it has come to light that in addition to allegedly raping a 7-year old girl, he also molested an 18-month-old infant.  AN INFANT!  This ranks Mahamu Kanneh among the most despicable of the despicable!  He should be in jail, and instead he's a "free man."

Perhaps the Most Awful News (Update)

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

Here's what I think anyway...
Here are a couple of new pieces of info regarding the blog I posted yesterday "Perhaps the Most Awful News I've Ever Heard."

1.  A Vai translator was sworn into court the morning the case was dismissed, even though it was dismissed for taking too long to find a translator and violating the defendant's right to a speedy trial.

2.  (and most egregious) The defendant waived his right to a speedy trial early in the proceedings so that the defense could perform their own DNA tests on the samples.

And a child rapist walks free...

Chavez Can Dish It, But Can't Take It

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

Here's what I think anyway...
Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez announced this week that foreigners who come to the country and criticize his government will be deported.

"How long are we going to allow a person- from any country in the world- to come to our own house to say there's a dictatorship here, that our president is a tyrant and nobody does anything about it?"

Funny... it seems that is exactly what Chavez did last year when he came to New York to speak at the U.N.  He called President Bush, "the Devil," and then headed up to Harlem to showcase his diplomatic skills there:

"I said he was the devil.  I think he's the devil.  He's a sick man, full of complexes, but very dangerous because he has a lot of power."

We didn't kick him out... and he's the President of a country!  But Chavez wants to kick out any foreigner, large or small, who would dare speak out about his government.  Perhaps that's why those of us who live in democracy consider his rule a "dictatorship."

Show and Tell Obama to Butt Out!

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

Here's what I think anyway... Democrat presidential hopeful Barack Obama proved his moderate credentials once again this week by telling Planned Parenthood supporters that sex education for Kindergarten students is, "the right thing to do."  As long as it's "age appropriate," of course.

When asked to clarify what sex education he felt was "age appropriate" for 5-year-olds, Obama danced around a bit, but eventually concluded that, "that's going to be determined on a case by case basis by local communities and local school boards."

Obama claims that his plan would simply teach about "inappropriate touching."  Really?!  Well, if that's the case, then what actually needs to be decided by the "local communities and local school boards?"

Actually, Obama's plan would simply provide cover for liberal school boards and their "educators" to begin introducing more mature topics into the Kindergarten dialogue (i.e. homosexuality, abortion, etc.).  The idea is to introduce these topics in a positive light to children early and often, so that it becomes completely normal to them.  It's called brain washing... socialists love it!

Never wanting to miss an opportunity to pretend he's a Conservative, Mitt Romney attacked Obama's comments saying that there is no sex education that is age-appropriate for kindergarteners.  Now, I'm not sure how long Romney will hold this position, but for now I'll say, "Way to go Mitt!"  (Though I'm still not voting for you...)

Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki responded to Romney's comments saying, "Barack Obama supports sensible, community-driven education because, among other things, he believes it could help protect them from pedophiles" (emphasis added).  She failed to clarify what those "other things" would be.

I don't buy it.  Senator, if you were really concerned about protecting children, then let's hear what you have to say about judges putting sex offenders back on the streets rather than in prison.  As President, what would you be prepared to do about that?

But let's be realistic here... Obama's concern is not protecting children, but indoctrinating them.

Senator, it is the right of PARENTS to decide what information is "age-appropriate" for their own children.  Government has no business there at all.

Perhaps the Most Awful News I've Ever Read

Disclaimer: I'm just an average guy...

Here's what I think anyway...
What could be worse than the repeated rape and molestation of a seven-year old girl?  I'll tell you... The rapist is arrested, there is a very strong case assembled (including DNA and credible witnesses), and then he's returned to the streets without a trial.  What could be the reason for this travesty?  Judge Katherine D. Savage dismissed the charges against Mahamu Kanneh because a translator could not be found for the defendant's native language, Vai (which is spoken in parts of Africa), and the delay in finding a translator, "violated his right to a speedy trial."

He spoke English well enough to attend high school and college in the United States.  He spoke English well enough to talk with detectives about the case.   And allegedly, he spoke English well enough to tell a seven-year-old-girl that she couldn't leave his apartment until she engaged in sexual behavior with him.  But a psychologist determined he did not speak English well enough to, "understand the proceedings against him."  I wonder how that assessment went...

SHRINK: Do you speak English well enough to understand the proceedings against you?

KANNEH: Uh... no I don't.  My native language is Vai, a rare dialect that is only spoken in remote parts of Africa.

SHRINK: Yep.  You're going to need an interpreter then.

He repeatedly raped a little girl!  He knows what he's there for!  And if he does need a translator, you work harder to find one.  Enlist someone other than your court clerk... like the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters perhaps.  Though the name is quite vague, apparently they exist to help courts locate JUDICIARY INTERPRETERS!!!!  The Washington Post enlisted them and was able to find 3 translators in one day, including one in same town as the court!!!

Or you could just set him free to destroy the lives of other innocent children... whatever's good for you, Judge.  Heck, I bet if this bench gig doesn't work out, there's a desk waiting for you at the ACLU.
