Driven to Common Sense

Governor Elliot Spitzer (D-NY) has announced that his is pulling the plug on his controversial plan to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.  What he won't tell you is that the reason he's scrapping the program is that, even in liberal New York, people don't want that program!  His job approval ratings have tanked!

Too bad... we're still waiting to find out exactly where Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) stands on the issue, and I bet she was about to give a stratight answer on it any day now... And not to sound too much like a conspiracy theorist, but since this was becoming a liability to her national campaign for President, do you think that she forced Spitzer's hand at all in dumping the program?

Who knows... but the debate is just going to shift to
San Francisco now anyway...

Politics of Hope or Politics as Usual?

This past Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" with Tim Russert, the following exchange occurred, in which Presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) admitted that his 2004 position on the Iraq War (which is 180 degrees different that what it is now) was 100% politically motivated:

TIM RUSSERT:  You were not in the Senate in October of 2002.  You did give a speech opposing the war.  But Senator Clinton’s campaign will say since you’ve been a senator there’s been no difference in your record.  And other critics will say that you’ve not been a leader against the war, and they point to this:  In July of ‘04, Barack Obama, “I’m not privy to Senate intelligence reports.  What would I have done?  I don’t know,” in terms of how you would have voted on the war.  And then this:  “There’s not much of a difference between my position on Iraq and George Bush’s position at this stage.” That was July of ‘04.  And this:  “I think” there’s “some room for disagreement in that initial decision to vote for authorization of the war.” It doesn’t seem that you are firmly wedded against the war, and that you left some wiggle room that, if you had been in the Senate, you may have voted for it.

SEN. BARACK OBAMA:  Now, Tim, that first quote was made with an interview with a guy named Tim Russert on MEET THE PRESS during the convention when we had a nominee for the presidency and a vice president, both of whom had voted for the war.  And so it, it probably was the wrong time for me to be making a strong case against our party’s nominees’ decisions when it came to Iraq.

Now, unless you really believe that there isn't "much of a difference" between the position of the guy actively waging the war (George W. Bush) and the one who was "opposed to this war in 2002, 2003, four, five, six and seven" (Barack Obama), I'd say the senator is lying.  Like every other Democrat in the race, his positions on the war are, by his own admission, politically inspired.

Now that's exactly the kind of principled leadership we need, isn't it?!

Another Dem Leader Showing 'Support' for Troops

Why does Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) refuse to give credit to our brave troops?  He says that the only reason violence is down in Iraq is that insurgents are running out of people to kill, and he had the nerve to make such an outrageous claim on the floor of the United States Senate:

"Violence is down, and certainly that is important and good, but many of the experts are saying one reason the violence is down is that so much ethnic cleansing has already taken place."

The real story, the fact that our men and women in uniform have been doing stellar work, is buried on page 19 of the New York Times today:

"American forces have routed Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, the Iraqi militant network, from every neighborhood of Baghdad, a top American general said today, allowing American troops involved in the 'surge' to depart as planned" (emphasis added).

Someone needs to tell Harry Reid that George Soros and his MoveOn.org cronies do not count as "experts."

How Many of Those Zeros Are Mine?

The AP is reporting today that the United States, a country of 300 million people, has racked up a national debt of $9 trillion!  To put that into perspective, our nation's current annual budget is about $2.5 trillion (give or take).  That means that, even if we freeze spending at $2.5 trillion, and put 100% of it toward paying off our national debt (no federal employee salaries, defense spending, entitlements, etc), and assume a rock bottom 4% interest rate, it would take our government almost four years just to dig out.

Bad news right?  Right... but adding insult to injury, our elected officials have only responded to the news by blaming (who else?) other politicians.  Guess how many are offering any workable solutions to our growing problem though?

Well, Democrats want to raise taxes, does that count?  After all, as their story goes, it was the evil George Bush's tax cuts that have led to this problem (even though those tax cuts have, in fact, raised revenues to the government)!

But let's be honest here.  We didn't run up this kind of debt with tax policy, but spending policy.  Maybe our leaders shouldn't borrow our great-grandchildren's money to add a few hundred million dollars for pet projects and special interests to every single piece of legislation that gets signed into law!  Now, I'm sure they get a nice cut of that when it comes time to raise money for their next campaign, but at what expense?  Oh, only nine trillion or so on the national credit card...

Let's face it.  Our government has really screwed us here!  Did you know that our $9 trillion debt includes money that's been "borrowed" from Social Security and other "government trust funds?"  Government trust... now there's an oxymoron!  Especially when it comes to trusting them with money!  Is it any wonder Social Security is in crisis?

And yet, as divided as Democrats and Republicans seem to be on every imaginable issue, there is one policy that enjoys bipartisan support.  They're going to continue borrowing in order to live beyond our national means, using the hard-earned tax dollars of future generations to buy votes, maintain power, and increase campaign cash on hand.

The love of money is the root of all evil in Washington.  The "Culture of Corruption" applies to both sides of the proverbial aisle.  You want ethics back in D.C.?  Correcting their own spending habits is the only way to get it done.

Thus, I doubt we'll be digging out anytime soon...

'Greatest Scam in History'

When John Coleman, founder of The Weather Channel, calls man-made global warming "the greatest scam in history," don't you think that's proof enough that Al Gore's cloak of "consensus," which he continues to cower behind, is simply imaginary?  In fact, Gore is hoping right now that Coleman's words do not find their way onto the airwaves and pages of America's media... that would just be too balanced!

A Quick Question for Rev. Robertson

Rev. Robertson, I'm not really bothered by your choice to endorse Rudy Giuliani today.  I must confess that I myself am really torn on which candidate to support in the Republican primary.  I'm just a little bit confused by the reasoning you gave...

Regarding the fight against global terrorism and radical Islam, you declared, "We need a man who sees clearly how to deal with the issue."  Well said.  But you're a pastor who has made a career of blaming every tragic event - from 9/11 to Hurricane Katrina - on the immorality that exists in our culture.

By your own logic then, wouldn't it stand to reason that the best way to fight Islamic radicals would be to elect a President who will actively fight to protect traditional marriage and the lives of the unborn?  A President who will work to route immorality from our country rather than condone it?

Reverend, I guess I'm just a little confused on what it is that you actually stand for...

Gore Vs. Galileo

In response to a question from NBC's Meredith Vieira, quoting a credible scientist who said he did not see the "smoking gun" which pointed to global warming as a human-caused phenomenon, Al Gore could only respond by trying to discredit the scientist and complain that the media has been too balanced in their coverage of global warming.  His justification for such a ridiculous statement?

Gore claimed that you don't need an opposing view when you report that the world is round, so why would you need one when reporting on man-made global warming?  There's a "consensus," claims Gore!  Well, Galileo might have something to say about "consensus" if he could speak today.

Galileo, 17th-century astronomer, was the first to popularize the idea that the earth was round and revolved around the sun.  His ideas so deeply upset the "consensus" of his day that he was put on trial and jailed for the remainder of his life.

Now, I'm not about to concede the idea that man-made global warming really has a scientific consensus.  There's actually a lot of debate within the scientific community.  But instead of joining that honest, healthy debate, Gore instead chooses to cower behind his imaginary cloak of "consensus."  If his evidence is really that solid though, why is he so afraid to debate the data with scientists who disagree?

History has shown time and again, such as in the case of Galileo, that consensus does not equal proof.  History will prove Al Gore wrong as well.

Besides, Al's campaign is not really about saving the world from a human-induced Armageddon, but expanding the size and scope of government.

Beam Me Up Kucinich

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) is trying to reinvigorate his failing presidential campaign by introducing articles of impeachment for Vice President Dick Cheney, accusing him of "abuse of power."  Don't you love it when Liberals get specific?!  Anyway, despite the support of 21 co-sponsors (all Democrats, of course), the measure is given little chance of even receiving a vote on the House floor.

Kucinich, already worried about the failure of his motion, is working on plan B.  It's not completely finished yet, but ultimately he's hoping his outer space buddies will return and wisk Cheney away to a distant galaxy.

Only You Can Prevent Voter Fraud

Trust in the electoral process is an essential bedrock of our Constitutional republic.  Voter fraud, perhaps more than anything else, serves to undermine confidence in our unique system.  Common sense dictates that the easiest way to prevent fraud is to present a photo ID when going to cast your vote.  You're required to have one when you drive, write a check, or board an airplane, and for the same reason.  In addition, a proper ID is so easy and inexpensive to attain that a law requiring one in order to vote does not discriminate against any responsible person.

It is the opinion of this writer that only politicians who have something to gain from a stacked ballot box would oppose this common-sense protection of our Democracy.

Appeasement at the DailyKos (2)

DailyKos user "Yacka Jah Yacka" is still proudly displaying his post which calls on Americans to convert to Islam in order to end the war on terror.  While I posted my response to this ridiculous idea on Friday, I thought I might pluck this little gem from the archives as another friendly reminder of why Americans may not want to submit to Islamic Sharia Law.  The article reports on a horrendous event that took place in March of 2002, when Saudi Arabia's fundamentalist police force "prevented schoolgirls from leaving a blazing building because they were not wearing correct Islamic dress."  Thus, fifteen young girls needlessly burned to death because they did not put their scarves on before fleeing the flames.

Still wanna convert "Yacka?"

Appeasement at the DailyKos

A liberal at the DailyKos has proposed a "simple solution" that will abruptly end the war on terror.  Blogger "Yacka Jah Yacka" says Americans should "convert to Islam."  Wow... that's brilliant!  Why didn't I think of that?!

The basis of this ridiculous argument is two-fold.  First, no Americans take their faith seriously, so what would it matter if we're praying to Jesus or Allah?

"... of all the Christians in America today who profess to be religious, how many of us are seriously devout?"

Well for starters "Yacka," me.  Faith is the foundation of my life, and prayer the means by which I seek guidance from my Savior.  It's not a "mindless" ritual as you suggest.  Christianity and Islam are neither compatible, nor interchangeable, and I will never bow my knee to Allah nor acknowledge Muhammad as a prophet.  "Yacka," you may not be the only American who is lacking sincerity in your "religion," but I'm not the only practicing sincere faith.

Second, "Yacka" reminds us that:

"Osama Bin Laden promised the wars would be over if Americans convert to Islam."

Well "Yacka," if you want to take Osama at his word, be my guest... I guess I'm just a little skeptical when the world's leading terrorist offers us a deal.  But you should at least get Osama's promise right.  He's not asking us for nominal belief in Islam and mindless prayers to Allah.  He said that if we want peace with him, not only must we convert to Islam, but we must then scrap our Constitution and submit to Sharia law.

I'm sure most American women love the idea of full-body burqas.  I bet Gap could design some pretty stylish ones!  Plus, they've probably never really enjoyed education or working outside the home anyway.  Oh, and I bet all Americans would simply love capital punishment for sexual promiscuity, marrying someone your parents don't like, or for those pesky infidels who refuse to convert.  And we'll execute them publicly, in order to set an example.

I say "Yacka," you truly have a bold vision for the future of America.  Me?  I'd rather keep the Constitution, continue in Christian faith and devotion, and win the War on Terror the old fashioned way... with superior military might.

Yes Italy, There is a Choice

Gay "marriage" advocates in Italy have published an ad in national newspapers today, using a photo of a new-born baby wearing a wrist band that reads "homosexual" to perpetuate the idea that "sexual orientation is not a choice."

While science has yet to show whether a person may be born with a certain susceptibility toward attraction to members of his or her own gender or not, this idea that there is no choice involved is simply false. Unlike skin color, which is a genetic trait that cannot be changed (no Michael Jackson jokes please), homosexuality is a behavior.

For instance, heterosexual men (if they are honest) would admit that they have a natural desire to be with more than one woman in the course of their lives. Even married men still have a certain susceptibility to wander.

Despite that desire, the man has the power to choose whether or not he will act on that desire. If he engages in an affair and his wife finds out, I doubt she will be won over by a defense that claims that her husband was born with that desire and had no choice but to sleep with another woman. That's ridiculous. His actions were the result of a choice that he made.

The Italian add is entirely false. Its premise is simply propaganda designed to radically change the definition of marriage, which has stood since the advent of recorded human history, and to try to label proponents of the traditional family as bigots.
